On December 5, the Internation Court of Justice in Hague issued its verdict on whether Greece violated the Interim Accord, a treaty signed by Greece and Fyrom in 1995, by objecting Fyrom’s accession process into NATO in 2008.
However, this verdict does not resolve the dispute over the name of FYROM, which adopted the name “Macedonia” when it declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1992.
The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs has responded to the verdict by stating its “full respect for the ICJ as the principal judicial organ of the United Nations” and that Greece would review the decision.
FYROM began legal proceedings against Greece after the Kostas Karamanlis government had blocked Fyrom’s accession into NATO in 2008.
The public hearings on the case were held from 21 March to 30 March 2011.
